He was born the strongest in the litter, weighing almost a full ounce more than his siblings. By weeks end he was the smallest and failing to thrive. Tube feeding was started and the battle for life began. While his siblings gained and grew at 3 weeks of age he had only managed to return to a little more than his initial birth weight. All his reflexes and activity mimicked those of littermates yet he was half their size. Gradually he began to gain weight a 1/4 to 1/2 ounce a week.
